Rising from Adversity: Navigating Through Higher Education After Disability and Medical Challenges

Updated: Feb 21

Life can be unpredictable, and pursuing education often comes with unexpected hurdles. The journey from transferring an associate level courses after changing career goals to striving for a doctorate is tough even in the best circumstances. Yet, when faced with a severe vehicle accident, multiple health issues, and the challenges that come with disability, this journey becomes a powerful story of resilience and determination. This article shares my challenging yet rewarding experience and underscores the tremendous support I found within higher education institutions.

The Turning Point: A Tragic Accident

It was a seemingly ordinary day when everything changed. A moment of distraction led to a devastating vehicle accident that left me not only physically injured but also emotionally scarred. The aftermath was not just about recovering from physical wounds; it initiated a series of chronic health complications that felt insurmountable.

Surgeries followed my injury, and the road to recovery was long and painful. Each setback during my rehabilitation made the dream of completing my education feel ever more distant. However, through this struggle, my resolve to rise above these adversities began to shine brightly.

Health Complications and Personal Trials

In addition to the physical injuries from my accident, I faced complex pregnancies and several painful miscarriages. Each loss weighed heavily on my spirit. The emotional toll reminded me constantly how fragile life can be and how many challenges we must tackle.

Becoming a mother came with its own set of hurdles. Health scares and threats of premature birth left me numb to accept the challenges. Balancing these complications required immense emotional and physical strength. I never felt like I was drowning though and so many do get that feeling.

Adding to my challenges were chronic respiratory issues, which complicated both my recovery and everyday life. Sometimes, even basic activities felt like climbing a mountain. It was hard to breathe deeply—not only due to my physical conditions but also from the immense pressure I felt from life's demands and not being able to do what I needed to and wanted to daily. It became a good week when I added it all up of time per month. Other than that I was down and struggling just to get out bed day from my bodies reaction to the medication for asthma, migraines, and chronic rhinosinusitis; and the overexertion of chronic dysphonia exercises.

The Weight of Stigma: Unjust Treatment

As I dealt with these medical issues, I faced an unexpected challenge: the stigma that often surrounds disability in healthcare systems. Instead of getting the help I needed, I felt like I was under suspicion. Healthcare professionals would question my integrity, often leaving me feeling marginalized and disheartened.

This stigma made my educational pursuits even more difficult. Instead of receiving understanding, I encountered a balance of understanding from some and judgment from others. To combat this, I realized I needed not just my inner strength, but support from those who could empathize with my struggles and understand my situation which I couldn't connect with due to my situation and COVID-19 restrictions at the time. Not laugh, smirk, and giggle at my issues.

The Transformative Role of Higher Education

Through all of these trials, higher education became a guiding light in my life. Academic staff, fellow students, and administration played crucial roles in my journey. Their support became invaluable. I support choosing the school that accommodates you because all of them provide the same education. Unless you are studying a program that is offered at limited colleges and universities.

Professors who believed in my potential reignited my determination. When I struggled, encouragement from classmates bolstered my spirit. I discovered the strength of community, which proved to be profoundly impactful. The combination of moral support and practical accommodations made it possible to focus on my studies without being overwhelmed.

Flexible scheduling allowed me to juggle health needs and coursework. The belief instilled in me by my educational environment—that education can help reclaim control over one's life—became a powerful motivator.

Resilience and the Pursuit of Knowledge

With every essay completed and every exam passed, I was not just learning—I was reclaiming my lost ground in part. The journey from my associate's degree toward a doctorate empowered me. Each step forward symbolized not just academic progress but personal victories over significant challenges.

The knowledge gleaned fueled my passion for education, providing the strength I needed to persevere. Graduating with honors was not just an academic milestone; it marked my rise above obstacles I had never imagined I would face.

Looking Ahead: A New Beginning with V.R.C.A.

With the strong foundation of my higher education, I am now ready to pursue a new chapter in my life as the CEO/Consultant/Coach for Virtually Renowned Consulting Access LLC (V.R.C.A.). I have been away from professionals in my field for so long I did not realize the challenge it would cause in me starting my own business and getting support. This program offers a chance to help others facing similar challenges and will enable me to turn my experiences into valuable tools for those navigating the complexities of healthcare and education by working with leadership.

This alignment of personal and professional goals creates a fulfilling synergy. It is incredibly rewarding to turn personal struggles into support for others, ensuring they do not feel alone or unjustly treated in their battles with disability.

Empower Others Through Understanding

Every journey through higher education is one of a kind, marked by individual experiences, challenges, and the support systems that either lift or weigh them down. My journey, filled with adversity and resilience, underscores the importance of empathy and robust networks of support within academia.

If you or someone you know is facing similar circumstances, I encourage reaching out for support. Talk to academic advisors, peers, or mental health professionals. No one should have to navigate these trials alone. Together, we can build a community where every individual has the chance to thrive.

For those within educational institutions, I urge you to advocate for policies that support students contending with medical and disability challenges. Change disability laws to identify the disability and not focus on the monetary factor. Meaning, an individuals should be identified as disabled at that time because no one can predict the future and what someone makes does not signify whether they are disabled. Some people can work 12 hour a month and make $3000 or more dollar a month and most states allow a disabled individual to work at least 20 hours a week to keep their disability status, bur how much they make in those 20 hours should never be a factor. Let’s influence change and create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to soar. We owe it to the next generation.

In the face of adversity, remember that hope and support are often just around the corner, ready to illuminate your path forward. Here’s to new journeys, fresh starts, and rising together from the depths of challenge.
